Introduction to Coaching Equine Sport is an introductory training course. Completion of this course does not constitute a regulated or professional equestrian coaching qualification or, by itself, demonstrate practical coaching competence.

What this course is

Introduction to Coaching Equine Sport is an introductory online course. It provides foundation knowledge and theory about coaching in equine sport: the coach's role, safety and risk, assessing riders and horses, session planning, communication and reflective practice.

What this course is not

  • Successful completion does not constitute a regulated or professional coaching qualification.
  • A certificate confirms completion of this course only.
  • An online knowledge assessment cannot demonstrate practical coaching competence in a live arena environment.

Practical training and recognised qualifications

Learners should obtain appropriate practical training, supervised coaching experience and any recognised qualification, insurance, first aid certification and safeguarding clearance required for the coaching they intend to deliver. Reputable pathways include those offered by the British Horse Society (BHS) and other UK equestrian governing bodies.

Inherent risk

Horse riding and equestrian activities involve inherent risk of injury to people and horses. Nothing in this course removes that risk.

Working within your competence

You must work strictly within your own competence and experience, and within the rules and supervision requirements of the venue or organisation you are working with.

Welfare and safety come first

Horse welfare and human safety take priority over any coaching objective, session plan or progression described in this course.

Not professional advice

Course information is educational only. It does not replace professional veterinary, medical, legal, safeguarding, insurance or health and safety advice.
