Assessing the Rider

The core coaching skill: reading position, balance, stability and effectiveness — and finding the cause rather than the symptom.

By the end of this module you will understand how to

  • — Assess a rider using the sequence position → balance → stability → effectiveness
  • — Observe alignment, seat, leg, upper body, hands, tension, symmetry and coordination systematically
  • — Identify the likely root cause of a fault rather than correcting the visible symptom

A sequence you can trust

New coaches see everything at once and fix whatever they noticed first. Experienced coaches work in an order, because the order tells you what is causing what.

  • 1. PositionHow is each part of the rider's body positioned? Their alignment, base of support and the angles of their joints make up the frame that everything else depends on.
  • 2. BalanceCan the rider stay over their base of support as the horse moves? Are they with the movement, behind it, or ahead of it?
  • 3. StabilityCan they maintain balance without gripping or bracing? Stability is balance that survives change of pace, direction and gait.
  • 4. EffectivenessCan they now apply clear, independent aids that the horse understands? Effectiveness is only possible once Position, Balance and Stability are satisfactory.

Coach tip

Work down the list, not up it. Correcting an aid problem when the cause is a balance problem produces a rider who tries harder and gets worse.
