Planning a Lesson
The Assess → Goal → Plan → Coach → Adapt → Review cycle, and an interactive lesson-plan builder you can save.
By the end of this module you will understand how to
- — Apply the Assess → Goal → Plan → Coach → Adapt → Review planning cycle
- — Write a single clear session objective with a measurable review method
- — Build and save a complete lesson plan including easier and harder alternatives
The planning cycle
Planning is not writing a script. It is deciding in advance what you will look for and what you will do about it.
A plan matters because it gives the session a purpose you can review. Without one, the lesson becomes a series of exercises and neither you nor the rider can say what improved.
In practice the cycle is quick. You watch the warm-up, choose one thing to work on, pick an exercise, coach it, change it if you need to, and finish by asking the rider what changed.
- AssessWhat is in front of you today — rider, horse, environment, mood, fitness. Never plan blind.
- GoalOne clear objective for this session, expressed as something the rider will be able to do or feel.
- PlanWarm-up, main exercise, a progression, an easier option and a harder option. Prepare all four.
- CoachDeliver it: observe, explain, let them practise, feed back, question.
- AdaptChange the plan in response to what is actually happening — the subject of the next module.
- ReviewClose the loop with the rider, and with yourself.
Progress saves automatically — 0 of 5 screens complete in this module.
