Module 9 of 10 · 30 min
Reviewing Your Coaching
Reflective practice: what happened, why, what you would change, and what happens next — plus a reflection form you can save.
By the end of this module you will understand how to
- — Apply a structured reflection cycle after every session
- — Evaluate your own communication, adaptation and safety management honestly
- — Turn reflection into a specific action for the next session
The reflection cycle
Coaches improve through reviewed experience, not experience alone. Ten reflected-on lessons teach more than fifty unexamined ones.
- What happened?Facts first, without judgement. What did the rider and horse actually do?
- Why?Causes: your decisions, the plan, the pair's state, the environment. Be honest about your own contribution.
- What would I change? One or two specific things — not 'be better'.
- What happens next? The concrete next objective for the pair, and the concrete next thing you will practise yourself.
Coach tip
Reflect within an hour of the session while the detail is fresh, and keep it short. A five-minute honest note beats a page written a week later.
