The Role of the Coach
What coaching actually is, the responsibilities you have for the rider and horse and where the limits of your competence lie.
By the end of this module you will understand how to
- — Explain what coaching is and how it differs from instructing
- — Describe your responsibilities to the rider, the horse and the wider environment
- — Recognise the limits of your own competence and know when to seek assistance
What coaching is
Coaching is the process of helping a rider improve through guided practice, feedback and reflection — not simply telling them what to do.
A coach creates the conditions for learning. You observe, decide what matters most right now, design a task that lets the rider experience the change, and then help them notice what happened.
The rider does the learning. Your job is to make the right thing easier to feel, and the wrong thing harder to repeat.
Coach tip
If the rider cannot tell you what changed, ask them a question that encourages them to think about what they felt, then allow them to repeat the exercise.
